Training As a First Step to Self-defense

When studying the field of personal protection, there are often cases when it becomes clear that this profession is not as conservative in nature as we all imagine it. The trainer and students must understand the purpose of their learning and train for possible situations. Moreover, it is important to know that personal defense is comparatively small in scope and only important for those who participate in it. Hence, this is by no means a tactical operation.

Many people attend shooting training. These are not only police and military, but also ordinary citizens. Some of them need documents and permission, while others sincerely want to learn how to handle weapons. However, not everyone comes to class prepared. Many coaches say they face many cases where people come to class without enough ammunition, and with an inappropriate holster. Moreover, even though some have gear, they still often clog it at home. However, the biggest challenges are faced by the large number of students who bring in the cheapest firearms.

Tactical vs. practical gear

There are people who come to training with tactical gear, including tactical vests, a hip holster, and a chest full of magazines. On the other hand, some come with practical gear well suited for concealed carry. What do you think? How many of those who came with tactical vests, knee pads, and long slide Glock handguns were police or military? The answer is simple: none of them. Therefore, it is worth realizing that there is a significant difference between public and private security. Most of us should be concerned about our own safety the most. Of course, good tactics can be used during training. However, the term “tactical” is sometimes confusing when applied to personal protection.

Most of the personal protection problems that people face over time are of a mental nature. So, if your everyday gear includes a tactical vest and eight magazines, rest assured your agency is likely to provide good training.

Personal defense is another discipline. While many shooters attend and perhaps even excel in tactical and carbine courses, many do not fully understand the application of these skills. The ideal solution would be to find a balance between who you can be and understanding which skills apply in your likely scenario. However, a more realistic option for those who take personal protection seriously is to train and practice applicable skills.

It often happens that many shooters simply cannot recognize quality equipment. Such people come with junk cartridges and cheap plastic holsters. It is important to remember that a handgun must be of high quality, and this does not mean that it must necessarily be expensive. The Glock 19 or CZ P01 are good examples of very reliable but affordable firearms. They are neither too small nor too big. Exactly what you need.

You also need to pay attention to the holster. It should be rigid and supported by a good quality weapon belt. Carrying ammo isn’t as difficult as it sounds. Another good option that’s affordable and reliable is Hornady Critical Defense. It offers good wound ballistics. If you choose this option, you will need a pair of high-speed loaders for your revolver and at least three magazines for your pistol. Most likely, you can do without reloading. However, it’s best to be careful and have a spare gun load with you just in case. In situations where the police pursue armed criminals, battles take place in a so-called large number of rounds. However, you should not pursue a threat if it retreats, otherwise, the situation may escalate into a fight.

“The presence of firearms deters crime more often than is required to shoot” – This is a repeated statement by the National Rifle Association. Basically, very often, once the attacker realizes that you are armed, the battle ends before it even begins. Of course, the first thought that arises in case of danger is to activate the handgun. However, it is also important to move away from X and get out of the line of fire.

Profit-motivated criminals definitely do not want to be shot. This list of threats does not include psychopaths who are prone to inflicting human pain and suffering or even death. Such people can be formidable both physically and mentally, and it is possible that they were shot or stabbed in the past. However, not all attackers can be unreliable addicts. You must be ready to confront the threat in any situation. If no shots are heard, then be sure – you are ahead of the game. Your real and primary goal should be to get out of the situation without being shot, stabbed, or assaulted. This is a guaranteed victory in the battle. Fast presentation of firearms from concealed carry and getting a quick and accurate hit is important here. Always the most important shot is the first.

In-home defense situations, you can have a pistol, rifle, or even a shotgun ready for quick access. The goal is basically the same, but here the focus shifts. It is important to convince the attacker to leave and end the conflict as soon as possible. We have other problems if there are children or other family members in the house. In this case, you need to start clearing the room or searching. The most important thing is to quickly ensure the safety of the entire family. This means you need to make sure you have identified the threat and then move carefully and take cover.

Still, don’t forget that there is always something worse. Therefore, worse than a shot, maybe a shot at the wrong person. It’s just common sense. Always be careful and keep lighting close at hand.

Gain practical skills

When a situation calls for an immediate shot, a final consideration comes in. Even though the double-tap is acceptable, a volley of fire or hosing a target is prohibited. The most effective way is accurate fire. You have to shoot at the center of the mass of an exposed target. Remember, you only shoot to stop. What the enemy does must be so terrible that it shouldn’t make any difference, morally or legally, if he dies as a result of the shot. In these situations, we never shoot to kill. On the contrary, we always shoot to stop.

Preparing a strong defense against a possible attack is always encouraged. Moreover, there is nothing wrong with taking the initiative and clearing the house or taking the initiative in training. However, never forget about the ultimate goal – to survive without a single shot. According to the law, if you need to shoot, then you probably face the question of survival.

Always focus on marksmanship. And this does not imply that the group should be target-oriented. On the contrary, it is important to focus on hitting quickly and taking other hits. You will agree with me that a group of 50 shots with random shots outside of the scoring points is not ideal. The most important are the shots you fire now and hit the target. Shoot accurately, and if the shot fails, shoot again.

Remember to practice your movements. At first, glance, drawing, and moving the gun can create conflict. In practice, however, a balance can be found. Draw as you move away from the target. Hard-working and relentlessly practicing are the only way to achieve results. Motivate yourself that you might need a gun to protect yourself and your family. The use of firearms must be morally and legally justified, so don’t jump to the conclusion that you are ready to use a pistol. After all, this is a very narrow circle of circumstances.
